Anorexia and bulimia affected 30% more people during the 2020 pandemic. And at the beginning of 2021, the trend shows no sign of slowing down. The alarm is raised by the Consult @ noi association, which appeals to the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza.
Restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic have increased social isolation and the impoverishment of social life. One of the consequences is a worsening of eating and nutrition disorders (anorexia, bulimia, etc.), which particularly affect adolescents. In 2020, there was a 30% increase in new cases, with mortality rising to the same extent.
To make the situation worse it is the lack of facilities in many Italian regions. A dangerous underestimation, also because this pathology in Italy has involved 3 million young people, pre-adolescents, adolescents, especially of the female gender. It therefore requires the recognition of a specific disease to be treated with multidisciplinary therapies and suitable treatment paths.
'The disorders of nutrition and nutrition, in particular anorexia, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, are a public health problem of increasing importance due to their spread, onset ever earlier among young people and complex multifactorial etiology.
It's important identify them and intervene promptly because, if not treated properly, they increase the risk of permanent damage to all organs and systems of the body which, in the most serious cases, can lead to death ', recommends the Higher Institute of Health (ISS), which highlights the risk of recrudescence also due to the 'inadequacy of the offer of psychological and psychiatric treatments during the COVID-19 emergency'.
To deal with this emergency it is not enough to dedicate a day to the phenomenon ('Fiocchetto Lilla', March 15). The Consult @ noi association, network of family associations involved in serious pathologies connected with nutrition and food disorders, asks Minister Speranza for an urgent meeting.
The appeal it is conveyed with a letter here attached.
